Persephone, whom the Romans called Persepine, was the daughter of Ceres, who was the Goddess of the Earth. One day there was a great volcanic outbreak of Mt. Etna, and Pluto, the God of the Underworld, or Abode of the Dead, came up from below to see what damage had been done. Venus, for a joke, had her son Cupid shoot an arrow of love into the Dark Monarch’s heart. His eyes fell on Persephone and he kidnapped her. When she didn’t come home Ceres went all around the earth searching for her.
